Meet your fellow travelers and guide at a central location in Rome before heading up to Umbria. Kick off the tour with a visit to a local winery where you will get an introduction to the region of Umbria including the importance of food culture in Italy. After an extended wine tasting and lunch, enjoy a short siesta back at the hotel before heading to an agriturismo (local farm house) for a festive welcome dinner. Mingle with fellow group members as you enjoy a typical Italian barbeque (using only regional meats and seasonal vegetables) before heading back to the hotel.
Take the morning to walk off last night’s feast and explore the town’s narrow streets on your own. After lunch head to a nearby village where you will begin your introduction to one of Italy’s most famed cuisines – pizza! Here you’ll visit a historic flour mill (one of the only mills which uses water to run its engine) and learn all about the production process of various wheats and grains used for traditional Italian pizza. After the tour, roll up your sleeves and get ready to create your own dough from scratch. After plenty of kneading, enjoy a glass of vino and mingle with travelers while your dough rises in a classic wooden oven. Put the finishing touches on your creation and enjoy it in the typical Italian fashion– piping hot from the oven!
Get ready to fill up on pasta! Today you’ll embark on a journey to the striking hillside town of Orvieto where you’ll meet Simona, an expert local chef who is well known throughout Europe. In true Italian fashion, Simona will welcome the group to her beautiful countryside villa, where she’ll conduct the class amongst a striking backdrop of beautiful lush countryside. And if the views don’t take your breath away, the food is sure to! Simona will share her secret to making the perfect handmade pasta and gnocchi for a truly authentic Italian meal. After you’ve had your fill (paired with regional sides and plenty of wine) head back to the hotel to relax and enjoy the evening on your own.
We hope you brought your fishing gear because today it’s all about seafood. After breakfast, head to the beautiful Lake Trasimeno where you’ll meet a local fisherman and learn all about fishing practices which have been passed down from generations. After spending some time wandering the lake and admiring its charming white water lilies, head to the peaceful fishing village where you are in for a real feast. In this region, trout and lake fish are king and this meal will feed you like one. After you’ve had your fill, head back to the hotel for an evening of rest.
Get ready to satisfy your sweet tooth because today it’s all about dessert. Enjoy a free morning on your own (perhaps with a trip to a nearby town for some light shopping) before heading to Perugia to meet an artisanal Gelatatio. Your trip would not be complete without the perfect gelato and in this course you will learn from the best using only the freshest ingredients. As you let your creation chill, enjoy a light meal of regional specialties but make sure to save room for dessert, the highlight of this special day.
En route back to Rome, enjoy one last special culinary excursion, specific to the season. Whether you embark on a truffle hunt, explore an olive harvest, or tour a local farm, your trip is sure to be capped off with a one-of-a-kind experience that will leave both your bellies and hearts full.
